OUR HIDDEN DOOR

Understanding our history fills us with gratitude. By honoring those who came before us and appreciating their contributions makes us recognize the essence of who we are today, even if we have never met them in person.

A Symbol of Resistance and Community

The Hidden Door stands as a beacon of resistance and unity for diverse communities. Since its establishment in 1979 on Bowser Avenue in Dallas, it has been a place of unforgettable and glorious moments. Originally popular with airline employees from Love Field, it was named nearly a decade later after a quote from a Doris Day and Rock Hudson film, where Hudson’s character mentions the “Hidden Door” – a hotel bar where they stayed.

Coincidence or Synchronicity?

When the bar was named, Rock Hudson’s sexual orientation was a closely guarded secret. As more people became aware of Hudson’s true identity, his bravery in coming out amidst societal prejudice became a symbol of strength. Hudson, an icon of masculinity, faced the challenges of the AIDS epidemic with courage, openly declaring his sexuality before his passing. This intersection of life and art made the Hidden Door’s name even more meaningful.

A Safe Haven for the LGBTQ+ Community

The Hidden Door evolved into a predominantly LGBTQIA+ space, a hub for political discussions, sports, entertainment, and much more. It became a sanctuary where the community could find safety, belonging and pride. Today, it remains a cherished symbol for those who have walked through its doors and for those who will continue to do so.

For the past 45 years, the Hidden Door’s legacy has been immeasurable. We look forward to many more years of celebrating this iconic space and the community it nurtures.
